I was excited when I started opening up Edge Quest and inside there was a set of awesome poseable figures. I have never fenced before but Edge Quest will but you right in the middle of a fencing match that bridges realism with play-ability. This unique 3d sword play game is designed by Jason Maliska and Aaron Vorce with art by Ian Moss. Edge Quest will be coming to Kickstarter March 11th.

Setup

Edge Quest comes with a few things to get setup before you play. Each player will get 2 player cards one to track life, edge points, and position and the other to track the attacks, techniques and other moves made. Each player gets a deck of cards for their actions and of course there are the 2 awesome figures with swords. I really liked the fact that the figures could be left handed or right handed. There are also templates for measuring distances and stances.

The two figures start in the middle near enough to get into the fray right away. Both of the decks of cards are the same for each player. The cards contain all the moves that are played throughout the game. The board is metal (the prototype I used) and the magnets in the feet of the figures allows them to maintain their positions after they are moved.

Game Play

The economy of Edge Quest is edge points. The edge points allow player to go before the other player, re-roll combat dice, activate advanced techniques and various other actions in the game. Keeping track of all the edge points is key. The turn starts with the player with the most edge points. The player will then construct their hand for the turn. They keep five cards in their hand and then draw up to ten cards.

The second phase of the game is the Outwit phase. This phase Starts with the player that had the lowest edge at the beginning of the turn. Taking turns each player may discard a card and take two edge tokens or place their rank token back in the supply.Once a player replaces their rank token this ends the phase for that player. This is the best way to gain edge and manipulate the maneuver and battle phase order.

The maneuver and the battle phase is where all the excitement is. Each player starting with the player that now has the last rank token (player who had the least edge) may take one step and change position. Each player does this twice before moving on to the battle phase. The battle phase starts with the player who has the first rank token. The attacking player then plays a card in the right hand slot of their player board. If the card was an attack then the other player may play a card in their right hand slot. The battle is then resolved and the winning player may play a new card (cards are moved to the left slot after being resolved). After the battle phase comes the assessment phase where players take new rank tokens depending on who has the most edge left. Play then returns to the battle phase if the left card is a red (attack) or purple (Defense) on top. If players do not return to the battle phase then they will return all of the edge they have and go to the construct phase.

Thoughts

First I love that the game is completely free form players may move their figure anywhere on the board. This gives you a lot of freedom to build your own unique strategies. I am a big fan of how the combos chain together by matching symbols on cards as you play them next to each other on the player's player board. The game albeit complex has a good flow that will have you fencing quickly and with ease. I love the figures and how well they move and hold their positions. The way the game is designed guides players through the game from start to finish. There are plenty of ways to tweak your experience that no two games will ever be the same. I hope that there is a multi player variant or a way to play with different weapon types. We will all have to keep an eye on the kickstarter and see where Edge Quest will take us.

This game is great for fencing enthusiasts or people who are just interested in fencing. The table presence of Edge Quest is awesome. Edge Quest will have you coming back for trying to master the art of fencing. Be sure to sign up for notifications on kickstarter for its launch on March 11th.
