Magiccon Chicago 2025 Wrapup

Writer's picture: BertBert

I have played a lot of Magic the Gathering. I played most of that in the 1990s in High School and right after. Magic to me was a fun collectible game. I always found it was real fun to open up a new booster pack, what new . I in fact can still remember the smell of the new cards (they smell different now). One of the reasons I left was the collectable nature of the game. Even back then there was still a drive to keep buying new cards and I felt that you had to keep buying cards in order to keep playing. When I got an email earlier this year inviting me to attend Magiccon: Chicago as part of the media I was a little surprised

Dungeons and Dragons

I did my homework and looked over the convention details. I was surprised to see that there was a bunch of Dungeons and Dragons events. I love me some D&D. Although D&D was a significant part of the convention the main focus was still on the namesake: Magic The Gathering. There was some live play D&D and I was able to sit in on a session that Dicecream Sandwich (Kevin Parr) was hosting called "Burrowed in Strixhaven". The session had a lot of audience involvement and was a great break from the sensory overload that is the show floor of Magiccon. There were lots of D&D events to play in and a place to buy all the newest D&D books and goodies. Also there were D&D pinball machines to play for free complete with a Gelatinous Cube.

Magic

When I got to Magiccon on Friday I did a lap of the convention space to check everything out. I was only there for a short time because of other commitments. I did have a chance to sit down in the content creator section and play couple of games of Magic to get back in the saddle. This event was hosted by Celtic Warrior Games. Very good people and very patient with all my questions. So that was a wrap for Friday for me. The team at Wizards of the Coast released a lot of info on the new Magic: the Gathering sets that are up coming like Avatar the Last Airbender coming on November 2025

Saturday My daughter and I went to Magiccon together. I did not think that a 5 year old would last long at the convention. There were a ton of family things to do. We played slot cars to celebrate the new Aetherdrift set that had just been released. We painted a D&D miniature, and we learned how to play Magic with Magikids a great organization that sets up schools, library and community centers with magic cards to teach kids how to play. Everyone we spoke to was really awesome. There was a real sense of inclusion and community at Magiccon especially for my daughter.

Cards

Back to what its all about... the cards. There were a few announcements made at Magiccon this year. There was a first look at Takir: Dragonstorm. Takir brings larger than life dragons and the people of Tarkir who stand in against them. Whats not to like about Dragons? I think these cards look really awesome and add some cool lore to the Magic realm. This set is due out on April 11th. Oh look there are some of the cards right there.

Magic In Space

So why should Magic limit itself to the Terra firma? Well they are not. In addition to Dragons Magic is going to space with a new set called Edge of Eternities. This set is going to have it all, warring alien factions, space artifacts, vast interstellar powers.Players will explore the Southera system in this fantasy space opera. This set is due out on August 1st. Wait that is during GenCon. Speaking of GenCon have you checked out my GenCon Coverage? So below is some of the new art from Edge of Eternities created by Adam Paquette.
