Review: Beast
Updated: Oct 22, 2021
There are still parts of the world that are unexplored and untouched by humans. People though they were alone in the wild. They couldn't have been further from the truth. Beast takes you past the hinterlands into the wild where the beasts live. In Beast one player takes on the role of the beast and the rest of the players hunt the beast.
When we started looking through the components and the map I was reminded of the 2001 film Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des loups) and this made me happy as I enjoyed that film very much. Adam and I took the mantle of the hunters and Rick was the Beast. The Beast moves around the board with hidden movement and as we cross its path or the Beast attacks us it reveals its tracks. Adam and I were hot on the heals of Hogbad from the very beginning.
Adam and I quickly realized we needed to coordinate our moves and work very closely together
To preform actions on the board you need to play the cards from your hand. The hand is built by drafting cards at the beginning of the turn. This reinforces the asymmetric players roles and helps bring a lot of variety into the game adding to its replay value. Adam and I quickly realized we needed to coordinate our moves and work very closely together to hunt down the beast.
Even though the Beast was able to be one or two steps ahead of us the whole game we were engaged and never lost hope for tracking down the Beast. Before the time ran out on us we traveled about 40% of the board and had a few terrifying interactions with Hogbad. The game is listed as a 2-4 player game and about 30 minutes of game time per player. I recommend heading over to Studio Midhall's page and signing up for updates for Beast. You can also play a Tabletop Simulator version too if you want to try it out.
I am very interested in keeping an eye on this game as it comes to Kickstarter
I reviewed a preview version of Best that may be slightly different than the final product. I am very interested in keeping an eye on this game as it comes to Kickstarter soon. When it comes to Kickstarter latter this year there will be a sixth Beast added when the Kickstarter is fully funded. Here is the link to the Kickstarter!
