Review: Boop

This game hits home with us as the weather starts to cool down here in the Midwest US and our cat wants nothing more than to be in the bed. So join us as we take a look at Boop a super cozy strategy game designed by Scott Brady and published by Smirk & Laughter Games

Boop is a super cute game that uses a abstract strategy to give you a cozy game to brighten up the darkest of winter nights.Starting with the quilted game that you play on to the adorable kitten and cat wooden meeples that it comes with. The rules are simple but the strategy is deep invoking feelings of Chess or Go but in a much more lighthearted way.

Players alternate placing kitten tokens of their color on the 6x6 quilted grid. Each player has 8 kitten tokens to start. When a kitten is placed on the board each adjacent kitten token is moved one space away...Boop. If booping a kitten token would move it into a space that has another token it dose not move. If you get three of your kittens in a row (organically or diagonally) then you can upgrade.

When a kitten is placed on the board each adjacent kitten token is moved one space away...Boop.

To upgrade take the three kitten tokens off the board that formed the three in a row. Then put them aside and replace them with 3 cat tokens. A player will have only 8 tokens at a time and they can be any combination of cats and kittens. Why would I want a cat rather than keeping my 8 adorable kittens? Well cats have some advantages first and foremost its the only way to win the game. You need 3 cats in a row to win the game. Secondly that cats don't take any guff from the kittens so when you place a kitten it wont Boop (move) a cat. However Cats will boop kittens and other cats!

This game ticks a lot of boxes without having much in said box. The cuteness factor of the cat and kitten meeples and the quilted playing board are all great quality and super fun. The strategy aspect of Boop grabs you and brings you into the game and will get you thinking in a strategy mindset before you know it. This is a great date night game or weekday game. Its so easy to learn and it will take awhile to get into the strategies that you will be playing it over and over.
