Review of Flip 7: A Quick and Exciting Card Game

Updated: 2 days ago

Flip 7 is one of the most quickly learned games that I have played in a long time. From taking it out of the box to playing it with our family was about 5 minutes prbablly a little less. I would have timed it if I knew it was going to be such a quick learn. Flip 7 is a press your luck card game designed by Eric Olsen designer of Booty Dice. Flip 7 is published by The OP games and the art work was done by O’Neil Mabile.

Setup

Setup for this game is super simple. Shuffle the cards and choose a dealer for the round. There are 92 cards in the box so its like shuffling 2 decks at one time. The box says its for 3+ players but then it clarifies that you will need another copy of the game to acomodate more than 18 players. This makes Flip 7 a great choice for a party game or to play with people new to gaming. I played it recently with my 5 year old and my father-in-law who is in his 70s at the same time. Flip 7 is really for the whole family.

Game Play

As I said earlier this game is fast and fun. Each player is delt one card by the dealer. After that each player can either choose to take onother card or stop and bank their points. Players can keep taking cards until they have 7 number cards or they decide to stop. If a player gets a double then they are out and score zero points for the round.

The cards are numbered from 0 to 12 and the amount of them increases the higher the number. There are twelve 12s and eleven 11s all the way down to 1 and there is one zero card. So if a player wants to score higher points there is a higher risk that they will get doubles and be out of the round. There are also several (6) Score Modifier cards, these will not count toward a players total cards to get to 7 but they will get the player extra points. Finally there are 9 action cards in the deck 3 of each kind. The 3 action cards are freeze, flip 3 and the second chance card.

When someone draws that 7th number card and it is not a double the rest of the players tend to get very loud...

The Freeze action card when drawn will imedeatly stop that players turn and they scor the points they have acumulated thus far in the round. The Flip Three card is probablly the most interesting of the three action cards. If a player is delt the flip three then they get three more cards. This can push a player to win or can push them to bust. The flip three card can also keep giving if another flip three is drawn. If a player has gone out but has flipped a second flip three or a freeze card then they may choose an active player to play it on. Finally there is a second chance card and this allows the player to redraw a card if they drew a duplicate number card in the round. Its a nice mulligan for a bad draw but be ware that you can still draw a card that will knock you out on your second chance.

When playing this press your luck game a player must think of the odds that the next card will be a double of one of the cards they have already drawn and weigh that with the amount of points they can score for the round. I find that Flip7 streches people's risk tollerance a bit more than normal and that just adds to the excitment. When someone draws that 7th number card and it is not a double the rest of the players tend to get very loud depending on your group.

Thoughts

Flip7 is an easy to learn and quick game that is fun for just about everyone. Flip7 gave me some of the feels of being in a casino but without the stress of loosing money. The game is exciting for everyone playing even if its not your turn. The game plays fast too a round can be over in a few minutes or in most cases about 4-5 minutes depending on your dealer and the excitment of the players. I really haven't had this much fun in a while playing a card game (thats not a party game like Everything Ever, we love that game too) that was so appealing for a larger audience. There is also a score tracker app and printable score sheets on the OP's website. I found that a simple scratch paper and pen worked just fine, but I am an old guy like that.

Flip7 is a great game for the whole family or as an ice breaker at work. This game can be a great apéritif before or after a game night. I recomend this game for the casual gamer and for the seasoned gamer as a source of joy and fun. The OP has released this game on their website and you should be able to find it at your FLGS.
